Tribute to Bentley, the Great Grey Owl and Cinnamon, the Saw-whet OwlWind Over Wings is paying tribute to two very special owls who passed away this fall, both far exceeding their lifespan. Cinnamon was Teddy’s partner for eleven years in our care. She had initially suffered an impact injury, possibly having been hit by a car. The lifespan of Saw-whets in the wild is 7-9 years. We believe that Cinnamon was at least 13.
Bentley, the Great Grey Owl was injured in Canada in 1986 when he was an adult. He had been intentionally shot in the face with a shotgun and was unable to hear or see on one side. Bentley was the gentlest bird of all raptors at Wind Over Wings. Both owls took part in thousands of environmental education programs through the years. We received many wonderful comments from volunteers who knew and loved both owls. The following words are from Heather Rowe:
