Solitaire
Solitaire was transferred to Wind Over Wings as
an adult in 2006 from the Glastonbury Audubon Center. She has
partial vision, seeing only in the upper region of her left
eye. She successfully taught another hawk with limited vision
how to eat, so Glastonbury thought that she should be at Wind
Over Wings with Forest, her roommate. This aviary was designed
for both hawks given their visual disabilities. In a large space,
they would otherwise have difficulty finding food and feeling
secure. They have adjusted well together. Both are important
additions to our educational service.

Forest
Forest is a handsome, young Red-shouldered Hawk,
born in 2005. On December 8th of that year he was found in a
driveway in Ansonia, having seizures. He was brought to the
Ansonia Nature Center. They determined that he had severely
limited vision. He arrived at Wind Over Wings in January. Our
veterinarian, Richard Alter, determined that the loss of sight
was due to trauma, possibly a hit-by-car accident. The optic
nerve becomes damaged when the brain swells. Forest learned
quickly to step on a glove in preparation for his life in education.
He is remarkable because of his willingness to learn, and his
ability to survive.
