Conservation through Education

Want a Fascinating Program Straight from the WILD?

Experience the wonder of being a few feet away from a magnificent bird of prey, or a rambunctious raven, or a beautiful Umbrella Cockatoo. Wind Over Wings will bring birds into your classroom, conference center, auditorium, place of worship or home for environmental education programs. Each bird is an individual and each has a story. Birds in our care are unable to survive in the wild. Each of them inspires us with their stories, stories of courage, adaptability, and resilience.

Programs are conducted by trained educators and are interactive and age-appropriate. There is no limit to the number of people who may attend a program. Programs may be scheduled for up to an hour in length individualized up to the audience’s needs and requests.

Birds of Prey
This program includes four raptors. Their stories will be told along with the natural history of each species. A variation of this program is Birds of Prey Including an Eagle! You may wish to have a variety; for example, hawks and two owls, or a kestrel, hawk, large and small owls.

The Extraordinary Lives of Owls - -

Owls are thought to have been on this earth 75 million years and yet many adults have never seen a live owl! This is a chance to meet two Saw-whet Owls (New England’s smallest owl); a Great Horned Owl (New England’s largest); and an Eastern Screech-Owl. We will talk about owls’ remarkable hearing, sight, and ability to fly silently, plus special areas of interest such as how to spot an owl in the wild. A power point program is available to show the owls of New England.

I Found a Baby Animal. What Do I Do?
What do you do if a baby bird has fallen out of its nest? Some animals need to be rescued but others do not. We discuss when to put a baby bunny back in its nest and how to help a baby squirrel. We also talk about animals who are injured. If a bird is hit by a car, when is it safe to rescue it? The birds joining us have a variety of stories. The Great Horned Owl was raised by a person (human-imprinted) and doesn’t understand the ways of an owl. The American Kestrel was hit by a car. Many stories.

Feathers and Flight - -
Did you ever wonder how birds fly, or how airplanes get off the ground? This is your chance to find out. Wind Over Wings will bring four birds of prey to discuss the magic of flight. We will bring a large owl to demonstrate silent flight when she flaps her wings; a kestrel who is a falcon among the fastest creature on earth; a Red-tailed Hawk to show beautiful feathers; and a Saw-whet Owl who had flown into a window. We discuss solutions to prevent window strikes.

Birds!

WOW has designed a special program for young children. For pre-schoolers, a special story is read about a bird. Three birds popular with children of this age are presented with special stories. The program is interactive, humorous, and gives the children a lot of opportunity to ask questions. Adults are welcome too!

Soaring with Hope

This inspiring program is designed for cancer patients and their families, clinicians and other caregivers. Hope Douglas, founder of Wind Over Wings, a breast cancer survivor shares remarkable stories of raptors and what they teach us about learning to cope with life’s changes and unexpected challenges. We also have a Soaring program specifically designed for enrichment for cancer center faculty.

cockatooBirds of Prey and an Umbrella, TOO

Huckleberry is a young Umbrella Cockatoo who will begin his career in education in the spring of 2012. He is accompanied by three raptors of your choice. We will discuss the differences between birds of prey and parrots. Cockatoos are the most frequent parrot given up for adoption, so we also address responsible parrot ownership.

Eagles!

In this program Wind Over Wings presents two eagles: a Golden Eagle the King of all Birds, and who are not often seen in Eastern United States, and our newest educator, a young Bald Eagle. He is presently in training in preparation for his life in education. We anticipate that he will begin programs during the spring of 2012. In this program, eagle training is discussed. A video presentation is included in this presentation.

Bird Brains

Considered one of the most intelligent bird species on the planet, the star of this program is Zachariah, the Common Raven. We will discuss avian intelligence, adaptability, and play. The program also includes the Red-tailed Hawk, Golden Eagle, and Umbrella Cockatoo.

The Red-tailed Hawk

Follow the adventures of Pale Male, a daring Red-tailed Hawk who manages to thrive in the urban world of New York City. This outstanding video is humorous, poignant, and true. Following the video, Wind Over Wings will present two Red-tailed Hawks.

Raptor Force

The remarkable video, Raptor Force will be shown featuring the Peregrine Falcon. This video displays the unparalleled capabilities of the fastest creature on the planet, the Peregrine Falcon. Wind Over Wings will present an American Kestrel, the smallest falcon in the United Stated. For comparison, we will also include the Great Horned Owl, one of the world’s most aggressive raptors, who has adapted differently than the falcon – with silence and talon power.
