AMERICAN KESTREL

Falco sparverius

STATUS IN NEW ENGLAND: The kestrel is the smallest and most common North American falcon and is found all over the continent but may be on the decline in the Northeast.

HABITAT: Forest, grassland with scattered trees, bushes, shrubs, open landscapes, desert.

FOOD: Small rodents, bats, insects, frogs

The kestrel is sometimes called the Sparrow Hawk, a misnomer because this robin-sized falcon is neither a hawk nor does its diet include a significant amount of sparrows or other small birds. The kestrel has the ability to hover while hunting.

Crecelle

In Old French Crecelle means “rattle” the sound they thought that described the kestrel’s call. Crecelle joined Wind Over Wings in December of 2011 during her first year of life. She was found on the side of a road in New York, presumably having been hit by a car. Two bones in her wing were broken. Wildlife Rehabilitator, Rosemary Maglienti, brought Crecelle to her veterinarian, Dr. Eaglefeather. Surgery repaired the compound fracture, however Crecelle is unable to fly but a few feet. Crecelle has shown a remarkable curiosity and aptitude for education. She has learned to step up on a glove in preparation for her life before an audience. Her debut will be in the spring of 2012.
